College in the High School
As students at Sedro-Woolley High School contemplate their options for dual enrollment programs, many find themselves deciding between College in the High School (CiHS) and Running Start at Skagit Valley College. Both programs offer excellent opportunities to earn college credits while still in high school.
Convenience and Familiarity
One of the primary advantages of the CiHS program is the convenience it offers. Students can take college-level courses at Sedro-Woolley High School, taught by approved high school teachers. This eliminates the need for commuting to Mount Vernon, saving time and reducing transportation costs. Staying in a familiar environment also allows students to maintain their high school routines and activities, providing a balanced and less disruptive experience.
Maintaining a Comprehensive High School Experience
Participating in CiHS allows Sedro-Woolley students to remain fully engaged in high school life. They can continue to participate in extracurricular activities, sports, and social events, ensuring they do not miss out on the full high school experience. This balance is particularly important for student athletes who need to attend practices, games, and meets without the additional challenge of commuting to a college campus. By staying at Sedro-Woolley High School, student athletes can seamlessly integrate their academic and athletic commitments, ensuring they excel both in the classroom and on the field.
Accessibility for All High School Grades
Unlike Running Start, which is typically available only to juniors and seniors, CiHS is open to students from grades 9 through 12. This inclusivity allows younger students to start earning college credits earlier, providing a head start on their academic careers. It also offers an excellent opportunity for self-motivated students to challenge themselves academically from an earlier age.
Minimal Costs
With the passage of SSSB5048, beginning September 1, 2023, institutions of higher education must provide enrollment and registration in CiHS courses at no cost for students in grades 9 through 12 at public high schools. This means that students at Sedro-Woolley High School can take these courses without worrying about tuition fees. The only cost is a minimal fee of $15 for the Accuplacer test, making it an affordable option for families.
College-Accredited Curriculum
CiHS courses at Sedro-Woolley High School are partnered with Skagit Valley College, Central Washington University as well as the University of Washington. These courses are taught using college curriculum and textbooks, with oversight from college faculty and staff to ensure they meet rigorous academic standards. Courses through Central Washington University and the University of Washington are NACEP Accredited, and those through Skagit Valley College are Washington Reviewed and Approved. This ensures that students receive high-quality, college-level instruction that is recognized and respected.
Early College Preparation
Dual enrollment programs like CiHS help prepare students for the demands of college. By taking college-level courses while still in high school, students learn to manage their time, handle increased academic responsibilities, and develop the study habits necessary for college success. This transition can be smoother and less intimidating when done within the supportive environment of their high school.
