Club Description
The SWHS Teen Court Team works in conjunction with Skagit County Superior Court to provide juvenile case dispositions rooted in restorative justice principles. Teen Court is a form of diversion for juvenile first time, low level respondents. Upon agreeing to the Teen Court option, a juvenile respondent pleads guilty and agrees to have their disposition determined by a Teen Court team. This team consists of students who fulfill common court roles (clerk, bailiff, judge, juror, etc.) and work to conduct a disposition hearing with the assistance of attorney mentors. The ultimate goals of Teen Court are accountability, community safety, restoration and transformation. Teen Court team members are obligated to a confidentiality agreement and work to provide a critical service to our community.

The SWHS Teen Court Team meets on Tuesdays during Cub Time in Room A102.

President Maddy F.: Leads Cub Time meetings including case preparation

Vice-President Jonathan G-N.: Supports the President (fills in if absent); greets new members & ensures they sign confidentiality agreements

Co-Secretaries Oliver E. & Alexa N-R.: Updates and makes copies of case script; tracks & files paperwork; prints certificates, etc.

Public Relations Officers Gabrial M. & Zoa H.: Promotes Teen Court (flyers, social media, events (8th-grade transition night), etc.), new membership, etc.

Washington State Youth Court Conference
On March 2, 2024, 13 SWHS students participated in this restorative justice skill development conference at the Seattle University School of Law. Zoa Hoyer was selected to be a student special advisor for the 2025 Washington State Youth Court Conference.

Senior Recognition Night
Our final Teen Court case for the 2023-24 school year is scheduled for May 15th. Prior to the disposition hearing, senior members of all Teen Court teams will be recognized by Skagit County Superior Court Judge, Elizabeth Neidzwski.
