When planning for retirement, teachers and school employees in Plans 2 and 3 often wonder whether to retire in July (when they stop working) or in September (when their contract ends). Several factors should be considered, such as the impact on cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs), additional service credit, and changes in health care coverage.

A July retirement means you will start receiving your pension earlier and your COLA will begin in the following July, but your SEBB health coverage will end in June. Retiring in September allows you to earn additional service credit for July and August and maintain SEBB health coverage during those months, but your COLA will be delayed by an additional year.

Once SEBB coverage ends, eligible retirees can purchase health insurance through the Public Employees Benefit Board (PEBB) program. Both programs are managed by the state Health Care Authority (HCA). Ultimately, the decision is personal and depends on factors like the cost of employer-supported benefits versus retiree health care. Be sure to communicate your decision to your employer, DRS, and HCA. For questions about retiree insurance, call HCA at 1-800-200-1004 (menu option 6), or contact DRS for questions about your retirement date or COLAs.
