Foundations K: A Strong Start for Young Learners
2025–2026 Program Overview
The Foundations K (Transition to Kindergarten) Program is a full-day early learning opportunity for children who need a little more time and support before entering kindergarten. It is designed to nurture growth in academic skills, social-emotional development, language, and motor skills.
📌 Please Note:
Enrollment for the 2025–2026 school year is now open.
Who is Eligible?
Your child may qualify for the Foundations K Program if:
They turn 5 years old between September 1, 2025, and August 31, 2026
They demonstrate needs in one or more of the following areas:
Academic readiness
Social-emotional development
Language development
Fine and gross motor skills
Eligibility is determined through a simple screening process. Transitional kindergarten programs are for students that do not have access to a quality preschool program and priority is given to students that show an identified need for additional preparation for success in kindergarten.
How the Program Works
Foundations K is a full-day classroom experience held at several Sedro-Woolley elementary schools.
After completing the Foundations K year, your child will move on to kindergarten at your neighborhood school the following fall.
The classroom environment is developmentally appropriate, welcoming, and focused on hands-on, play-based learning.
Why Choose Foundations K?
Foundations K is part of Washington’s Transition to Kindergarten (TK) initiative, which offers:
A strong, supportive start for students who need more time to grow before kindergarten.
A chance to build confidence and foundational skills across all areas of development.
A research-based program shown to help close early learning gaps and ensure long-term school success.
The program is guided by standards from the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) and focuses on the whole child: emotionally, socially, physically, and academically.
