Reminder, tomorrow is Picture Day at Mary Purcell Elementary School
If you aren't satisfied with the photo or your child misses the original picture day, retakes are scheduled for November 14.

Happy first day of autumn! It's time to say goodbye to the heat of summer and welcome the cool breezes of fall.
This season brings with it a vibrant display of colors as the leaves change, the smell of pumpkin spice in the air, and the excitement of upcoming school holidays (yes, some of us are already dreaming of winter break!).
Take a moment to appreciate the beauty of our changing season, whether you're sipping on a hot cider or taking a walk through your neighborhood, make sure to celebrate this first day of autumn in your own special way!

It's important to understand that chronic poor attendance in kindergarten and first grade is one of the best predictors of which students will eventually drop out of school. Missing just two days a month adds up to chronic absence. On the other hand, students who come to school regularly have far better options and opportunities open to them. Regular school attendance is linked to building trusting relationships, a healthier lifestyle, less risky teen behaviors, better time management, improved mental health, better social capital, and greater economic opportunities.
So let's encourage our young students to attend school regularly and make the most out of their educational opportunities! ππ¨βππ©βππ

π Join us in celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15. π
We are proud to recognize the rich heritage of Hispanic Americans in our community and the many contributions they have made to American culture. During the 2022-2023 school year, 1,097 of the 4,602 students enrolled in our school district identified as Hispanic/Latino. It is essential to acknowledge the vital role that Hispanic Americans have played in shaping our nation's history, art, music, language, and traditions.
We encourage everyone to take time this month to learn more about the history, culture, and achievements of Hispanic Americans.

As part of National Arts in Education Week, we wanted to recognize the outstanding efforts of our Sedro-Woolley High School drama students. These photos are from Amy Gregoryβs classes last week as they did a drama exercise called βBear, Salmon, Mosquito.β
It's a lot like "Rock, Paper, Scissors" but you use your whole body! It begins 1 v. 1.
Students begin back-to-back. Ms. Gregory does a countdown, when students hear "battle" they jump or spin around in the form of one of the animals.
(Bear eats the salmon, salmon eats the mosquito, mosquito bites the bear.)
After three rounds of 1 v. 1 the two opponents join forces and pick two other opponents to battle 2 v. 2. Then they join forces and so on and so on. The final three rounds are half the class v. half the class⦠It's so fun.
When Ms. Gregory asked the students, "Why would I have you do this?" the responses were insightful and spot-on:
get better at communicating without talking
work with people we don't really know
get comfortable moving around on stage
connect a movement with a sound
teamwork
"mistakes" aren't actually the worst thing
think on your feet
have FUN!
National Arts in Education Week is observed during the second week in September to promote education in the arts, including dance, theater, music, literature, design, media and visual arts.
