Jennifer Coomes, a Nationally Certified School Psychologist, brings warmth and dedication to her role supporting students and staff at Central and Big Lake elementary schools. With a passion for helping others and a diverse background that blends rural and urban experiences, Coomes has found her calling in education.
A product of Southwestern Washington and Northern Oregon, Coomes' journey into education wasn't always a straight path.
"When I was 12, I probably wanted to be a Veterinarian due to my love of animals."
However, life took her on a different trajectory. She pursued her undergraduate and graduate studies at Eastern Washington University, where she met her husband and earned her Educational Specialist degree in June 2015.
Coomes' educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in Applied Developmental Psychology (2012) alongside her specialist degree. Despite her initial inclination toward physical therapy, Coomes found her purpose in the field of education, driven by a desire to make a difference in the lives of others following her own experience with intensive physical therapy.
Reflecting on her journey, Coomes shares, "Fast forward 17 years and here I am. Still helping others, just not in the way I had originally planned."
In her role as a school psychologist, Coomes finds fulfillment in the moments she shares with students and families.
"The first time I led a meeting where the educational team and parents decided that their student no longer required special education services..." She describes the emotional meeting where tears of happiness flowed freely, a testament to the hard work and growth the student had achieved with support.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Coomes finds joy in spending time with her two children, ages 4 and 2. Her hobbies range from family activities to gardening and sports, a reflection of her diverse interests and passions.
"I love puzzles, reading, baseball, softball, football and basketball."
Among her favorite literary works, Coomes holds a special place for the Harry Potter series, which she grew up with. She also draws inspiration from a poignant quote: "Be who you are, not who the world wants you to be."
Coomes embodies the spirit of compassion and dedication that defines the educators of Sedro-Woolley. Through her journey and commitment to nurturing minds and hearts, she exemplifies the transformative power of education and the profound impact it has on individuals and communities alike.
